EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Daniel Dewey Barnard, an influential American lawyer and congressman, in the prime of his career. Born on March 12, 1796, in New Hampshire, Barnard was educated at Dartmouth College and went on to study law in Vermont. He was admitted to the bar in 1818 and began practicing law in New Hampshire. Barnard's political career began in earnest in 1825 when he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He served in the state legislature for several terms before being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1835. Barnard represented New Hampshire's 3rd district for four terms, serving from 1835 to 1841. During his time in Congress, Barnard was a vocal advocate for states' rights and opposed many of the policies of the Jackson administration. He was also a strong supporter of the annexation of Texas and played a key role in securing its admission to the Union as the 28th state in 1845. After leaving Congress, Barnard returned to his law practice and continued to be active in state politics. He served as a delegate to the New Hampshire Constitutional Convention in 1850 and was a strong opponent of slavery. Barnard died on January 25, 1861, just months before the outbreak of the Civil War. This photograph, taken in the mid-19th century, captures Barnard in the height of his political career. His stern expression and sharp gaze convey a sense of determination and conviction, reflecting his strong beliefs and commitment to his principles. The photograph is a testament to Barnard's significant contributions to American history as a leading lawyer and congressman during a pivotal period in the country's development.
