EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enchanting presence of Melite, the tragic heroine from Corneille's renowned play "Médée" (Medea), first performed in Paris in 1629. The photograph print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich history of French theatre and the enduring allure of this classic drama. Corneille (1606-1684), a leading figure in the French literary scene, penned "Médée" as a part of his contribution to the development of the tragedy genre. The play, based on the ancient Greek myth of Medea, tells the story of the titular character, a sorceress who, in a fit of jealous rage, takes revenge on her unfaithful husband Jason by killing their two children. Melite, portrayed in this photograph, is the daughter of Creon, king of Corinth, and the wife of Jason. She is an innocent bystander in the tragic events that unfold, yet her fate is inextricably linked to that of her mother. In the play, Melite is a symbol of innocence and purity, contrasting sharply with the vengeful and vindictive Medea. The photograph print, with its intricate details and striking tonal range, invites us to contemplate the complexities of human emotions and the power of love and revenge. It serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring appeal of Corneille's masterpiece and the rich cultural heritage of French theatre. This image, with its historical significance and artistic merit, is a must-have for scholars, theatre enthusiasts, and anyone with an appreciation for the art of storytelling. The photograph print offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to connect with the emotions and themes that continue to resonate with audiences today.
