EDITORS COMMENTS
This series of photographs offers a glimpse into the monumental construction process of a Dreadnought-class battleship in 1909, as it took shape in a British shipyard. The first image showcases a 12-inch gun, a key component of the formidable armament that would arm these colossal warships. In the second photograph, an armour plate is meticulously positioned, a testament to the battleship's robust structure designed to withstand enemy fire. The third photograph captures the thrilling moment as the foremost funnel is hoisted aboard, its massive size dwarfing the workers and cranes involved in the operation. The funnel, seen in the adjacent image, lies on its side, waiting to be lifted into place. The final image reveals the upper deck of the battleship taking shape, with various structures and machinery beginning to emerge from the raw steel. These photographs offer a unique window into the early 20th century arms race, where major world powers vied to build the largest and most powerful navies. The construction of the Dreadnought-class battleships marked a significant turning point in naval warfare, setting new standards for armament, armour, and size. These magnificent vessels, symbols of national pride and military might, would play a pivotal role in the lead-up to the First World War.
