EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century print depicts the enchanting Juan Fernandez Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile. The islands hold a rich historical significance as the place where Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, was marooned for an estimated five years between 1689 and 1704. Selkirk, a Scottish sailor, had grown tired of the tyrannical behavior of his captain and demanded to be put ashore. His wish was granted, and he was left on the island's most inhabited isle, Más a Tierra, along with some supplies. Selkirk's experiences on the island, filled with both hardships and discoveries, would later influence Defoe's famous novel, Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719. The print, created around 1870, beautifully captures the rugged terrain and raw beauty of the Juan Fernandez Islands. The image, with its clear blue waters, lush greenery, and rocky cliffs, transports us back in time to an era of adventure and exploration. The historical significance of this place, as the site of Selkirk's marooning, adds an intriguing layer to the print, making it not only a stunning visual representation of the islands but also a testament to the rich history they hold. This print is an excellent addition to any collection focused on maritime history, exploration, or the works of Daniel Defoe. Its intriguing story and captivating imagery are sure to spark curiosity and inspire further research into the fascinating tale of Alexander Selkirk and his time on the Juan Fernandez Islands.
