EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the elegant and refined presence of a Chevalier de Saint-Louis, a nobleman of the French court during the reign of King Louis XIV (1643-1715). The year is 1693, and the Chevalier, dressed in the resplendent attire of the time, stands before an ornate fireplace, his eyes fixed on an unseen object with deep concentration. The grandeur of the room, adorned with intricate gold detailing and lush fabrics, is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the French court at Versailles. The Chevalier's attire is a marvel in itself, with a voluminous red doublet, a white lace cravat, and a black waistcoat, all embellished with gold braid and lace. His breeches are held up by a wide leather belt, and his shoes are adorned with elegant buckles. But what draws the eye most is the luxurious muff that he clutches in his hand. Made from the finest furs, the muff would have been a necessary accessory for the Chevalier during the cold winter months at Versailles. The Chevalier de Saint-Louis was a member of the most prestigious orders of nobility in France, the Order of Saint Louis, which was founded by King Louis IX in 1297. The Order was revived by King Louis XIV in 1693, and membership was restricted to the most loyal and distinguished members of the court. The Chevalier's membership in this esteemed order is denoted by the cross that can be seen pinned to his chest. This image offers a glimpse into the world of the French court during the Age of Absolutism, a time of grandeur, opulence, and intrigue. The Chevalier's stoic demeanor and meticulously crafted attire serve as a reminder of the importance of appearance and decorum at the royal court, while the muff underscores the necessity of practicality and comfort in even the most luxurious of settings.
