EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the regal presence of Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great or Carolus Magnus, as he is depicted with his Queen Hildegarde von Schwaben in the late eighth century. Charlemagne reigned as King of the Franks from 768, King of the Lombards from 774, and as Emperor of the Romans from 800. Hildegarde, born in 753, was the daughter of Count Hildegar, Duke of Swabia, and was a prominent figure in the royal court. Charlemagne is shown in his royal attire, adorned with a crown and holding a scepter, symbolizing his sovereignty and power. Hildegarde, dressed in a flowing gown and intricately plaited hair, is depicted as a graceful and elegant queen. Two courtiers, dressed in the fashion of the time, are also present, adding to the grandeur of the scene. Charlemagne's reign was marked by significant achievements in art, culture, and politics. He is known for his role in the Carolingian Renaissance, which saw a revival of learning and the arts in Europe. Hildegarde, too, was an influential figure in her own right, known for her patronage of monasteries and her role as a peacemaker between her husband and his vassals. This image offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the royal court during the medieval period, with its intricate costumes, regal bearing, and attention to detail. The image is a testament to the enduring legacy of Charlemagne and Hildegarde, whose influence continues to be felt in European history and culture.
