This evocative photograph captures the essence of Breton fishermen engaging in the traditional practice of Chasse-Maree, or 'following the waves,' off the coast of Brittany, France, circa 1880. The image transports us back in time to an era when the sea provided the primary livelihood for the region's inhabitants. The Chasse-Maree was a communal fishing method used by Breton fishermen to catch fish in the shallow waters near the shore. The technique involved the use of small, flat-bottomed boats called 'fishing sledges' or 'chasse-marees,' which were pulled by teams of men along the shore as the waves carried them out to sea. As the boats were carried out, the fishermen would cast their nets into the water and retrieve their catch when the boats were returned to the shore. The photograph shows several fishermen in traditional Breton attire, huddled together as they pull a chasse-maree through the shallow water.
