EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of Ben Jonson (1572-1637), a towering figure in English literature as both a playwright and poet. The image, created during the latter half of the 17th century, provides a tantalizing glimpse into the face of a man who lived through some of the most tumultuous periods in English history. Born in London in 1572, Ben Jonson was a contemporary of William Shakespeare and Francis Bacon. He began his literary career as a poet, publishing his first collection, "Celebrated Poems," in 1616. However, it was his plays that would secure his enduring place in literary history. "Volpone," "The Alchemist," and "The Devil is an Ass" are just a few of the works that showcased his unique blend of wit, satire, and social commentary. Jonson's plays were performed at the prestigious Blackfriars Theatre, which he helped establish in 1608. He was also a member of the "Lord Chamberlain's Men," the company that would later become the King's Men, and for which Shakespeare wrote many of his most famous plays. Despite his many accomplishments, Jonson's life was not without its challenges. He was known for his fiery temper and was involved in several brawls, including one that resulted in the death of a man. He was also imprisoned for debt on several occasions. Despite these setbacks, Jonson continued to write and produce plays and poetry until his death in 1637. His work, which explores the complexities of human nature and the absurdities of society, remains a rich source of inspiration for artists and scholars alike. This portrait, with its intricate detail and somber tone, serves as a fitting tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on English literature and culture. The folds of his cloak, the furrowed lines on his face, and the piercing intensity of his gaze all speak to a life well-lived and a legacy that continues to endure.
