EDITORS COMMENTS
Antoine Bellacoscia, also known as "The King of the Corsican Bandits," is depicted in this photograph taken around 1905. Bellacoscia was born in Corsica, a Mediterranean island known for its rich history and rugged terrain, in 1827. He became a notorious figure in Corsican folklore for leading a band of robbers and brigands who terrorized the island's inhabitants and French colonial authorities during the late 19th century. Bellacoscia's criminal empire was vast, and his exploits were legendary. He and his gang reportedly robbed wealthy travelers, plundered merchant ships, and even raided the French military. Despite the danger he posed, Bellacoscia was a charismatic leader, and his followers were fiercely loyal to him. He was said to have a code of honor, and he reportedly only targeted the rich and powerful, sparing the innocent. Despite the romanticized image of Bellacoscia as a Robin Hood-like figure, he was a criminal, and his actions caused fear and chaos in Corsica. The French colonial authorities were determined to bring him to justice, and they launched a massive manhunt to capture him and his gang. Bellacoscia was eventually captured in 1892 and was sentenced to life in prison. He died in prison in 1907, but his legend lived on, and he remains a symbol of Corsican resistance and rebellion to this day. This photograph captures Bellacoscia in his later years, with a weathered face and piercing eyes that seem to hint at the many adventures he had lived through. It is a reminder of a bygone era, when law and order were challenged by charismatic outlaws like Antoine Bellacoscia.
