EDITORS COMMENTS
Albuera 1811: A Pivotal Moment in the Peninsular War This evocative print captures the aftermath of the Battle of Albuera, fought on May 16, 1811, during the Peninsular War. The scene depicts the decisive moment when British forces, led by Sir John Beresford, emerged victorious against the French army under Marshal Soult. The battle, which took place in southern Portugal, was a hard-fought engagement that came at a great cost for both sides. Beresford's army, though initially outnumbered and outmaneuvered, managed to turn the tide of the battle thanks to the heroic actions of the 57th Fusiliers. These brave soldiers, seen in the foreground of the print, held their ground against the French onslaught, buying precious time for their comrades to regroup and launch a counterattack. The Battle of Albuera was a significant victory for the British and their Portuguese allies, as it prevented the French from advancing further into Portugal and securing a strategic position. However, the cost of this victory was high. Beresford's army suffered heavy losses, with around half of his troops being killed or wounded. The French, too, paid a heavy price, losing an estimated 5,000 men and five generals in the battle. This historical print serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Peninsular War, a conflict that lasted from 1808 to 1814 and saw some of the most intense and brutal fighting of the Napoleonic Wars. The Battle of Albuera was a pivotal moment in the campaign, and its outcome had far-reaching consequences for the course of the war and European history as a whole.
