First ever Aerofilms photograph EPW000001
LONDON AERODROME, Hendon. The first ever Aerofilms commercial aerial photograph taken in July 1919 showing the London Country Club (formerly the London Flying Club). The building was later used as Hendon Police College, which opened in 1934. This site had been promoted as London Aerodrome since 1911, and was used in the First World War to train Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service pilots. It reopened to civilian use in 1919 and was the venue for flying displays, as well as being the first base for Aerofilms. In 1922 the RAF took over the aerodrome and civilian flights were excluded. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in aviation history - the first ever Aerofilms commercial aerial photograph taken in July 1919. The image showcases the London Country Club, formerly known as the London Flying Club, located at Hendon's historic aerodrome. This site holds great importance as it had been promoted as London Aerodrome since 1911 and played a crucial role during World War I for training Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service pilots. After reopening to civilian use in 1919, this aerodrome became a hub for flying displays and served as the initial base for Aerofilms. Established in 1922, this pioneering company revolutionized aerial photography by capturing breathtaking images from above. However, it is important to note that this particular photograph does not depict their commercial activities. Over time, the building featured in this image underwent transformation and was repurposed as Hendon Police College when it opened its doors in 1934. Its historical significance cannot be overstated; serving multiple purposes throughout different eras while remaining an integral part of aviation heritage. Preserved within Historic England's remarkable Aerofilms Collection (see Links), this rare glimpse into our past offers a window into early twentieth-century aviation advancements and reminds us of the rich legacy left behind by pioneers who dared to take flight beyond conventional boundaries.
