APSLEY HOUSE, London. " Stapleton Cotton, Viscount Combermere" 1839 by John HAYTER (1800-91). Stapleton Cotton (1773-1865) was Wellingtons Commander of Cavalry during the Peninsular War, distinguishing himself particularly at the Battle of Salamanca. He was not present at Waterloo where command of cavalry went to Lord Uxbridge. He is shown here as Colonel of 1st Life Guards, an honorary court position he was given in 1829. WM 1531-1948
