EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling Parkeston Quay in Harwich, capturing a significant era of British railway history. The original painting by Norman Wilkinson was created for a Great Eastern Railway poster titled "The Continent via Hook of Holland" showcasing the company's ferry services to European destinations. Dating from approximately 1905-1923, this image portrays the grand steamships and passenger ships that were an integral part of these cross-channel journeys. The Great Eastern Railway commenced its operations between Harwich and various European ports as early as 1864, initially serving Rotterdam and Antwerp before expanding its routes to include Hamburg and the Hook of Holland. As we admire this scene, it is fascinating to note that many other British railway companies also operated their own ferry services to connect with continental Europe during this period. This particular artwork represents not only a beautiful depiction but also serves as a testament to the extensive network established by these companies. In 1923, the Great Eastern Railway Company merged with the London & North Eastern Railway Company, marking a significant milestone in British rail transport history. Today, thanks to National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we have access to this remarkable piece which showcases both technological advancements and artistic talent from yesteryears.
