EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the Peninsula War (1808-1814), as British troops under the command of the Duke of Wellington and General Sir Thomas Picton storm the fortified walls of Badajoz in Spain, on the night of April 6, 1812. The Peninsula War was a significant campaign in the Napoleonic Wars, fought between the French forces led by Napoleon Bonaparte and the allied forces of the Seventh Coalition, which included the British. The siege of Badajoz had been a grueling and protracted affair, with the British and their allies laying siege to the city for over a month. The defenders, largely composed of French and Spanish troops, had held out against repeated assaults, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers. However, the determination of Wellington and Picton to take the city was unwavering. In the early hours of April 7, 1812, the British troops launched a massive assault on the city walls, using ladders and scaling machines to breach the defenses. The fighting was fierce, with hand-to-hand combat raging in the moonlit streets. The British forces eventually gained a foothold in the city, and the defenders were either killed or forced to surrender. This print, by an unknown artist, depicts the intensity and chaos of the assault on Badajoz, with British soldiers charging forward over the walls and engaged in fierce combat with the defenders. The image also shows General Picton, in his distinctive red coat and shako, leading his troops into the fray. The eventual capture of Badajoz was a significant victory for the allied forces, as it opened up the way for them to advance deeper into Spain and ultimately defeat the French. This historical print is a testament to the bravery and determination of the soldiers who fought in the Peninsula War, and serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that this campaign played in European history.
