EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the intense focus and determination of American athlete Forrest W. "Fred" Kelly as he soars over the 110-meter hurdles during the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. Held from May 30 to June 14, 1912, the Stockholm Olympics marked the fifth modern iteration of the international athletic competition. Kelly, a native of Michigan, was a seasoned hurdler, having won the AAU championships in 1909 and 1911. In the 110-meter hurdles final at the 1912 Olympics, he faced formidable competition from fellow American and eventual silver medalist, Myer Prinstein. The race was a close one, with both athletes demonstrating remarkable agility and strength as they cleared each hurdle. In this image, Kelly is mid-jump, his body bent at the waist, arms outstretched, and eyes fixed on the next hurdle. The crowd, a sea of hats and umbrellas, watches in anticipation, their collective breath held as they witness this remarkable display of athleticism. The atmosphere is electric, the tension palpable, as the outcome of the race remains uncertain. This photograph is a testament to the history of the Olympics and the enduring spirit of competition. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world came together to celebrate human achievement and the pursuit of excellence in sport.
