An Alarming Occurrence at a Menagerie: A Zoo Keeper Mauled by Five Leopards, 1870 This striking image captures an alarming and rare event that took place at a menagerie in the late 1800s. In the photograph, a brave zoo keeper is seen being attacked by no less than five leopards, their powerful jaws clamped onto his arms and legs. The scene is one of chaos and danger, with the keeper's colleagues attempting to fend off the animals and free their colleague from their grasp. The menagerie, a popular form of entertainment in the 1800s, was a collection of exotic animals kept for public display. These animals were often kept in captivity, and interactions between keepers and the animals were a common part of the attraction. However, as this photograph shows, such interactions could also be fraught with danger. The year was 1870, and the incident caused quite a stir in the press. Reports of the attack described the keeper as being "mauled" by the leopards, with some accounts suggesting that he was lucky to escape with his life. The cause of the attack is unclear, but it is believed that the keeper may have provoked the animals or been careless in handling them. Despite the risks, keepers continued to work with dangerous animals in menageries and later in zoos. This photograph serves as a reminder of the dangers and challenges faced by those who worked with wild animals in captivity in the 1800s.
