EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Sir Clements Markham, the president of the Royal Geographical Society, proudly presents Captain Robert Falcon Scott to King Edward VII on board the Discovery, prior to Scott's groundbreaking polar expedition to Antarctica. The event took place on August 5, 1901, at Cowes, a coastal town on the Isle of Wight in England. Captain Scott, dressed in his naval uniform, stands tall and confident before the monarch, who is seated on a throne-like chair. King Edward VII, dressed in a formal suit and adorned with his royal insignia, looks intently at Scott with a sense of approval and encouragement. Markham, standing to the side, salutes the king as a sign of respect and admiration for the upcoming expedition. This momentous occasion marked the beginning of Scott's Terra Nova Expedition, which aimed to reach the South Pole and surpass the achievements of previous polar explorers, including Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott's own earlier attempt in 1901. Scott was accompanied by his team, including Ernest Shackleton and Edward Wilson, who would later become famous in their own right for their contributions to Antarctic exploration. The Discovery, a sturdy and well-equipped exploration ship, served as the base for Scott's expedition. It was outfitted with advanced scientific equipment and provisions to sustain the team during their long and arduous journey. The ship's name reflected the explorers' determination to discover new territories and expand human knowledge of the polar regions. This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of polar exploration, as the king, the president of the Royal Geographical Society, and the intrepid explorer came together to support and send off Scott and his team on their daring expedition to the Antarctic.
