EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts a pivotal moment in the history of the ancient Near East: the release of Jehoiachin, the exiled King of Judah, from the prison cells of Babylon. In the year 562 BC, Jehoiachin's long and unjust imprisonment came to an unexpected end when his captor, King Evil-Merodach of Babylon, showed him mercy. The Bible's Old Testament, specifically the Book of Kings (25:27-30), recounts this remarkable event, which took place circa 587 BC. Jehoiachin, also known as Jehoiakim or Coniah, had been taken captive by the Babylonians during their conquest of Jerusalem. He had reigned for only three months before being deposed and replaced by his uncle, Zedekiah. After Zedekiah's rebellion against Babylon, Jehoiachin was taken into custody and held in the infamous prison of Riblah. Evil-Merodach, who had ascended to the Babylonian throne following the death of his father, Nabopolassar, chose to show clemency to Jehoiachin. The king not only released him from prison but also granted him a daily allowance of bread, ensuring his survival. This act of kindness was a significant deviation from the usual Babylonian practice of executing defeated monarchs. This photograph print, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich historical tapestry of the ancient world. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to witness the unexpected compassion of Evil-Merodach and the poignant moment of freedom for Jehoiachin, the once-deposed King of Judah.
