EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration depicts a pivotal moment in the Franco-Prussian War, as General Ducrot's forces make their daring attempt to break the 10-week-old siege of Paris by crossing the Marne River on the 29th of November, 1870. Known as La Grande Sortie, this counter-attack was an important attempt to turn the tide of the war and lift the siege that had been encircling the city since September. However, the attack was ultimately unsuccessful, and the siege lasted for another four months before the French forces were forced to surrender on the 28th of January, 1871. The scene shows the French troops, led by General Ducrot, wading through the Marne River, determined to launch an attack against the Prussian forces on the opposite bank. The importance of this action lies in the fact that it was one of the last major attempts by the French to regain control of the war, and despite the failure, it remains an important chapter in French military history. The illustration, from the 7th volume of Illustrated London News, published in 1871, captures the intensity and bravery of the soldiers as they make their way across the river, with the backdrop of the setting sun, adding a sense of urgency and drama to the scene. The failure of La Grande Sortie marked the end of the Franco-Prussian War, leading to the eventual unification of Germany and the French defeat, an event that had significant political and social consequences for Europe as a whole.
