EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a group of English tennis champions and notable players from the late 19th century. Seated at the top, from left to right, are Edward Dudley Sears Browne, Reverend James Thomas Hartley, and Charles Walter Grinstead. Hartley, a clergyman, was the Wimbledon Champion in 1879 and 1880. Grinstead was a renowned player and coach. Next to them, standing, are Maud Watson and H. F. Lawford. Maud Watson, wearing a stylish Victorian dress, was the Lady Champion at Wimbledon in 1884. Lawford, an Irish champion, won the Wimbledon Gold Prize in 1884. At the bottom of the photograph are W. Renshaw and his sister Lillian Watson. W. Renshaw, a dominant figure in men's tennis during the late 1870s and early 1880s, was the Wimbledon Champion from 1881 to 1884. Lillian Watson, Maud's sister, was the runner-up at Wimbledon in 1884. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of tennis, showcasing the elegance and grace of these early champions and sportsmen. The image is a testament to their skill, determination, and the evolving popularity of the sport during this period.
