EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the momentous occasion of the French announcement of the new King of Dahomey, now known as Benin, in 1894. The image shows the newly appointed monarch, resplendent in his regal attire and holding a parasol, surrounded by French military officers and dignitaries. The scene takes place on the grounds of the royal palace, with the flags of France and Dahomey flying proudly in the background. The year 1894 marked a significant turning point in the history of Dahomey, as the French colonizers, led by General Alphonse-Louis-Alfred-Léonor-Félix-Marie-Robert d'Allemagne, had recently invaded and annexed the kingdom. Following the defeat of King Glele, the French sought to establish a new ruler who would be compliant with their colonial ambitions. The man chosen to assume the throne was Akenzua II, the son of the late King Glele. In this photograph, Akenzua II appears calm and composed, despite the tumultuous circumstances that led to his ascension. The French officials, dressed in their military uniforms, look on with a mixture of pride and satisfaction, having successfully installed their chosen monarch. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex and often contentious relationship between Europe and Africa during the late 19th century. It also serves as a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the resilience of African monarchies in the face of colonialism.
