The Russian amputee, with his determined expression, struggles to make progress despite the generous donations of crutches from his Samaritan friends - the United States and Japan. The irony lies in the fact that the same countries, who are extending a helping hand, were also the major suppliers of weaponry that inflicted the injuries in the first place. The First World War had left Russia's economy in shambles, and the Allied powers, in an attempt to contain the Bolshevik Revolution, extended financial and military aid. However, this relief effort, as depicted in the photograph, seemed to have little impact. The Japanese and American crutches, though wonderful in their intent, were unable to mend the deep wounds inflicted by the Great War.
