Chut! Papa Dort!, 19th century, (1921). Creator: Unknown
Chut! Papa Dort!, 19th century, (1921). Ssh, Papa is sleeping!. The emperor Napoleon dozes in his throne as a child holds a finger to her (his?) lips. Toys - a Punch doll and a horse on wheels - are on the stool in front of the child. Despite the dress and ringlets, this may be Napoleons son, also named Napoleon, (1811-1832). It was common for boys to wear girls clothes during this period. (Napoleon did have a stepdaughter, Hortense Beauharnais, who would have been about 12 when her mother met Napoleon in 1795). From " Napoleon", by Raymond Guyot, [H. Floury, Paris, 1921]

Chut! Papa Dort!, 19th century, (1921) - Ssh, Papa is sleeping!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from the 19th century, we are transported back to a moment of tranquility in the life of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The scene depicts a child delicately placing a finger to her lips as she stands beside the dozing emperor on his throne. A sense of innocence and playfulness fills the air as toys - a Punch doll and a horse on wheels - rest on a stool in front of the child. While it may seem peculiar at first glance, there is an intriguing twist to this image. Despite the child's appearance with dress and ringlets, it is suggested that this could be Napoleon's son, also named Napoleon. During this period, it was not uncommon for boys to wear girls' clothing. The historical context adds depth to our understanding of this photograph. We learn about Hortense Beauharnais, Napoleon's stepdaughter who would have been around 12 years old when her mother met him in 1795. This connection raises questions about family dynamics and gender roles during that era. Through Raymond Guyot's book "Napoleon" we are granted access to this intimate moment frozen in time by an unknown creator. The colorized engraving brings vibrancy and life to an otherwise distant past. This print serves as both a visual delight and an invitation for contemplation about fatherhood, childhood innocence, and societal norms across different centuries.
