London Pride, GWR poster, 1946

Poster produced for Great Western Railway (GWR) to promote rail travel to London. The poster shows a view across the Thames to the Houses of Parliament from the Albert Embankment on the south bank of the river. This poster was made in 1946, just after London had survived the Second World War and looked forward to the future with hope. Frank Masons series of posters of London do not depict the damage inflicted by the Blitz, but instead show life going on as normal. Artwork by Frank Henry Mason, who was educated at HMS Conway and spent time at sea. He painted marine and coastal subjects and was involved in engineering and shipbuilding

London Pride, GWR poster, 1946 - A Glimpse of Hope and Resilience

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of post-war London in 1946, as depicted by the talented artist Frank Henry Mason. The Great Western Railway (GWR) commissioned this remarkable poster to promote rail travel to the city, showcasing a breathtaking view across the Thames to the iconic Houses of Parliament from Albert Embankment. Intriguingly, Mason's series of London posters deliberately omitted any traces of war damage inflicted during the Blitz. Instead, he chose to portray life resuming its normal course – a testament to Londoners' indomitable spirit and their unwavering determination to rebuild and move forward. Frank Henry Mason's artistic prowess shines through in this piece. Educated at HMS Conway and with experience at sea, his expertise in marine and coastal subjects is evident. His involvement in engineering and shipbuilding lends an air of authenticity that adds depth to his artwork. As we gaze upon this evocative print today, it serves as a poignant reminder not only of London's resilience but also symbolizes hope for a brighter future. It encapsulates a time when Londoners looked ahead with optimism after enduring unimaginable hardships during World War II. Preserved by the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this timeless masterpiece transports us back in time while celebrating both artistry and history alike.
