Thessaloniki, Greece - Heptapyrgion or Yedi Kule Fortress

The Heptapyrgion (modern Eptapyrgio), also known by its Ottoman Turkish name Yedi Kule - a Byzantine and Ottoman-era fortress situated on the north-eastern corner of the acropolis of Thessaloniki in Greece. In both languages the translation is " Fortress of Seven Towers", however it actually features ten, and was probably named after the Yedikule Fortress in Istanbul, Turkey. View from the stone pit (Carrieres) at the base of the hill. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the timeless beauty and rich history of Thessaloniki's Heptapyrgion Fortress, also known as Yedi Kule, in Greece. Situated on the north-eastern corner of the acropolis, this Byzantine and Ottoman-era fortress has ten towers, despite its name translating to 'Fortress of Seven Towers' in both Greek and Turkish. The name is believed to have originated from the Yedikule Fortress in Istanbul, Turkey. The hillside backdrop of the fortress, with its lush greenery and rocky terrain, provides a striking contrast to the imposing structure. The view from the stone pit at the base of the hill adds to the fortress's mystique, inviting visitors to explore its ancient walls and uncover the stories of the past. The Heptapyrgion Fortress has a fascinating history, having served as a citadel, castle, and prison throughout the centuries. It was built during the Byzantine Empire and later fortified by the Ottomans. The fortress has been a symbol of Thessaloniki's resilience and strength, having withstood numerous attacks and invasions. Thessaloniki, also known as Salonica or Salonika, is Greece's second-largest city and a cultural melting pot. Its history is a testament to the diverse influences that have shaped the region, from the Romans and Byzantines to the Ottomans and Greeks. This photograph is a reminder of the city's rich past and the enduring allure of its historic sites.
