EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of discovery as Sir William Flinders Petrie, renowned British archaeologist, carefully lifts a golden crown from the mummy of Queen Khnemit at the ancient site of Dahshur in Egypt. Dated to the 7th Dynasty, around 2181-2125 BC, Queen Khnemit was discovered in the intact tomb of Pharaoh Amenemhet II in March 1894. The tomb, located near the pyramid complex of Dahshur, contained an impressive collection of fine jewellery and historical artifacts, making it an important find in the annals of Egyptian archaeology. Petrie, who is considered a pioneer in the field, made numerous significant discoveries during his time in Egypt between 1880 and 1901, including over 50 tombs. This photograph, taken in 1895, captures the excitement and intrigue of uncovering the past as Petrie delicately lifts the golden crown from the mummy, revealing its secrets to the world for the first time. The discovery of Queen Khnemit and her tomb, with its wealth of treasures, provided invaluable insights into the history and culture of ancient Egypt.
