EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this menu print from The Holborn Restaurant, located on Kingsway in High Holborn, London. Dated 1923, this historic menu offers a glimpse into the elegant dining experience once offered at this grand establishment. Nestled next to the Embassy Theatre, The Holborn Restaurant was a spacious and impressive venue, known for hosting banquets and large events. In fact, the restaurant played a significant role in London's Olympic history, hosting banquets for athletes participating in the 1908 games. The restaurant even contained a Masonic Temple, adding an extra layer of intrigue and exclusivity to the dining experience. The British Chess Federation was also founded within these walls in 1904, making The Holborn Restaurant a hub for cultural and social activity. The menu features an extensive list of dishes, from classic British fare like roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, to more exotic options like "Chicken a l'Indienne" and "Souffle Suissesse." The atmosphere of the restaurant was just as impressive as the food, with live music and dancing adding to the lively and festive atmosphere. Sadly, The Holborn Restaurant closed its doors in 1954, and the building was eventually turned into offices. The historic structure has since been demolished, and the site is now home to a Sainsbury's supermarket. This menu print is a precious reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of The Holborn Restaurant, offering a glimpse into the past and a taste of the elegance and sophistication of dining in early 20th century London.
