This evocative photograph captures a weary and aged King George V during the Mattino, or morning audience, at Buckingham Palace on May 2, 1928. The King, who had ascended to the throne in 1910 at the age of 42, had ruled for 18 years and was visibly worn by the weight of the crown. Dressed in the traditional uniform of the Order of the Garter, the monarch sat before his throne, surrounded by his Privy Councillors, as he listened to the daily business of the realm. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of the monarchy during this period. King George V, who had come to the throne following the death of his father, King Edward VII, was a dedicated and hardworking monarch who had led the country through the First World War and the turbulent aftermath of the Russian Revolution. His reign saw the restoration of the monarchy's prestige and the modernization of the British monarchy.
