With the looming threat of World War II on the horizon, Lord Gort's leadership and experience were crucial in preparing the BEF for the impending conflict. Born as John Standish Surtees Prendergast Vereker, Lord Gort was a decorated military officer, having been awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during the First World War in 1918. His distinguished military career continued into the Second World War, where he held various positions, including Commander-in-Chief of the Home Forces, and Chief of the Imperial General Staff.
