This evocative image captures the poignant moment when Friedrich V, Elector Palatine, sets his gaze upon the Bohemian landscape that once was his kingdom. Born in 1557, Friedrich was a passionate Protestant leader who, in 1619, was elected King of Bohemia with the support of the Protestant Union. However, his reign was short-lived. In November of that same year, the Battle of White Mountain took place near Prague, where the Catholic forces, led by the Holy Roman Emperor Matthias, dealt a crushing blow to the Protestant forces. Friedrich was forced to flee Bohemia, marking the beginning of his exile. The defeat at White Mountain and his subsequent exile earned him the melancholic title of the 'Winter King.' This title not only reflected the harsh winter conditions of his exile in the Palatinate but also symbolized the end of the short-lived 'Golden Age' of the Protestant Reformation in Bohemia.
