EDITORS COMMENTS
A Regal Christmas Greeting: The Coronation of Faisal I of Iraq in 1921 This evocative image captures the historic moment of the Coronation of Faisal I of Iraq, which took place on the 23rd of August 1921, at 6 am in the morning. The ceremony took place in the ancient ruins of Ctesiphon, near the Tigris River, in present-day Iraq. Faisal I, dressed in traditional Iraqi attire, sits majestically on his throne, surrounded by dignitaries and British officials. Sir Percy Cox, the British High Commissioner, stands to Faisal's right, while Sir Aylmer Haldane, the British Commanding Officer, is to his left. Kinahan Cornwallis, the British Political Agent, and Sayied Hussain Afnan, the Secretary of the Council of Ministers, are also present. Tahsin Qadri, the King's Aide-de-Camp, holds the royal sword. The ceremony took place in the ancient arch of Ctesiphon, which dates back to the Sassanian Empire. The ruins of the arch stand proudly over the Kora and Ezra creeks, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. The Coronation of Faisal I marked the formal recognition of Iraq as a British protectorate, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Faisal I was chosen as the first King of Iraq due to his Arab descent and his role as the Sharif of Mecca. This image, with its rich history and cultural significance, makes for a unique and intriguing Christmas greeting card. The blend of ancient and modern elements, the mix of Eastern and Western traditions, and the sense of history in the making, all come together to create a truly memorable and thought-provoking message for the holiday season.
