EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Trevessa lifeboat, a testament to human resilience and survival, which was on display at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. The Trevessa was a Hain Line steamer that sank in the Indian Ocean on June 4, 1923, approximately 1,700 miles from the coast of Western Australia. The ship was loaded with zinc concentrates and carried a crew of 44 men. Tragedy struck when the vessel encountered a violent storm, leading to its unfortunate demise. Despite the dire circumstances, thirty-four of the crew members managed to survive the ordeal by braving the harsh elements in the Trevessa's lifeboat for an astonishing 23 days. Their journey was filled with hardships, as they battled the elements, dwindling food supplies, and the ever-present threat of dehydration. Eventually, their fortunes changed when they were discovered by the French schooner, Le Recherche, and were taken to Rodriguez Island near Mauritius. The Trevessa lifeboat became a symbol of hope and perseverance, inspiring awe and admiration from all who heard their incredible story. This clinker-built lifeboat, a marvel of engineering and craftsmanship, was meticulously preserved and showcased at the British Empire Exhibition as a reminder of the indomitable human spirit and the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
