In an era between the wars, when air travel was still a novelty, this image showcases the pioneering spirit of Imperial Airways' flying boat "Centurion". The photograph depicts Major Tryon, the Postmaster General, carefully placing the King's letter into the mail bag before it embarks on its journey from Southampton to Durban. The occasion marked not only an important correspondence between two influential figures but also symbolized a groundbreaking milestone for postal services. This event inaugurated the Post Office's innovative "all-the-way-by-air" scheme, revolutionizing mail transportation.
