Inside the abandoned Antarctic research British Base " W" on Detaille Island, Lallemand Fjord, Loubet Coast, Antarctica. MORE INFO The base was abandoned in 1959 with images looking as if the researchers thought they would return immediately. This base is located below the Antarctic circle. The purpose of the base was for surveys, both geological and meteorological. It was occupied from 21 Feb 1956 until 31 Mar 1959. The base was evacuated when sea ice and weather made relief by ship impossible. Personnel closed the station and transferred to Horseshoe Island (Station Y)
