EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historic notice produced for the London & Dover Railway between 1864 and 1899. Serving as a promotional tool, this notice aimed to entice travelers with the promise of fast trains connecting them to the picturesque Kent ports of Folkestone and Dover. These ports were not only gateways to England but also served as vital links to rapid steamer sailings transporting passengers to France. The London, Chatham & Dover Railway, also known as the London & Dover Railway, played a significant role in shaping the transport network of south-east England during this period. In 1864, they acquired the Jenkins & Churchward fleet of steamers and commenced passenger services between Dover and Calais. This strategic move expanded their reach across borders. Artistically rendered by an unknown artist, this artwork captures both the allure and efficiency associated with railway travel at that time. It symbolizes progress and connectivity while showcasing the beauty of these coastal destinations. It is worth noting that in 1899, the London & Dover Railway merged with another prominent player in regional transportation -the South Eastern & Chatham Railway- further solidifying their influence over south-east England's rail network. Preserved by NRM/Pictorial Collection at National Railway Museum, this print offers us a glimpse into an era when railways revolutionized travel experiences for countless individuals seeking adventure or business opportunities beyond national boundaries.
