The worn and weathered faces of these men, many of whom had likely spent their later years as paupers in the workhouse system, tell stories of hardship and resilience. The workhouse system, a mainstay of British social welfare from the 16th to the mid-20th century, was designed to provide shelter, food, and basic care for the destitute, the infirm, and the elderly. In exchange, able-bodied inmates were expected to work long hours in the workhouse, often in harsh and demeaning conditions. Despite the stigma and hardships associated with the workhouse, many veterans of wars and conflicts found themselves among its residents.
