This powerful and historic image captures the moment of unity between workers and soldiers during a joint meeting on the Field of Mars in Petrograd, Russia, in June 1917. The Field of Mars, a large open space in the heart of the city, had become a focal point for political gatherings and rallies during the Russian Revolution. In this photograph, workers and soldiers are seen seated together on the grass, their gazes fixed on the speakers at the podium. The workers, dressed in their work clothes and aprons, sit on the left side of the image, while the soldiers, in their uniforms, occupy the right. This visual representation of the alliance between the working class and the military was a significant development in the revolutionary events of 1917. The Russian Revolution, which began in March 1917, was a period of political and social upheaval in Russia. The February Revolution, which overthrew the Tsarist regime, was followed by the Provisional Government taking power. However, the people of Russia were not satisfied with the new government, and various political factions and social classes began to demand more radical changes. The workers and soldiers, who had been fighting side by side in the trenches during World War I, began to form their own revolutionary committees and councils, known as Soviets. The joint meeting on the Field of Mars was an important step towards the formation of the Petrograd Soviet, which would play a key role in the October Revolution later that year.
