This photograph, taken in 1898, captures the myopic yet brilliant mind of the English clergyman and academic, Reverend William Archibald Spooner (1844-1930), as he intently reads at his desk in New College, Oxford. Spooner is best known for his infamous Spoonerisms, a collection of humorous verbal blunders that continue to amuse audiences to this day. Born in 1844, Spooner spent his formative years at New College, where he earned a reputation as a gifted scholar and a dedicated clergyman. Despite his poor eyesight, which is evident in this image as he peers intently at the text before him, Spooner's intellect was unmatched. He went on to become a fellow of New College and a Canon of Christ Church. The photograph, taken in 1898, captures Spooner in the prime of his academic career. He is seen seated at his desk, surrounded by the trappings of a scholar - a stack of books, a quill pen, and a mortarboard cap.
