This evocative image captures the grim reality of life in the trenches during World War I. The year was 1915, and the Western Front had become a horrific stalemate, with both sides dug in and deadlocked in a brutal and seemingly endless conflict. But the Germans were not the only formidable foe the soldiers had to face. The conditions in the trenches were ideal for the breeding and proliferation of rats, who thrived in the damp, unsanitary environment. These rodents, dubbed 'trench rats,' posed a greater worry for the soldiers than the enemy at times. They carried diseases such as bubonic plague and typhus, which could spread rapidly through the crowded and unsanitary trenches. In this photograph, we see a soldier carefully stepping over a dead rat in the muddy trench floor. The rat lies motionless, its tiny eyes fixed in a lifeless stare.
