Bowlby's career was marked by a remarkable diversity of experiences. He began his journalistic journey in London, contributing to various publications before setting sail for China in 1841. However, Bowlby's tenure as a correspondent was not without its challenges. In 1854, he was captured by a Tartar general named Tong Haiquan, who was leading a rebellion against the Chinese government.
