The image captures the deep-set eyes and determined gaze of a man who was not afraid to venture into the unknown, reporting on the complex and often tumultuous events unfolding in the Far East. Bowlby's career was marked by a remarkable diversity of experiences. He began his journalistic journey in London, contributing to various publications before setting sail for China in 1841. Once in China, he quickly established himself as a respected and influential figure, providing invaluable insights into the political and social landscape of the region. However, Bowlby's tenure as a correspondent was not without its challenges. In 1854, he was captured by a Tartar general named Tong Haiquan, who was leading a rebellion against the Chinese government. The general, known for his cruelty and unpredictability, subjected Bowlby to harsh treatment, refusing to release him despite numerous diplomatic efforts. Despite the pleas of foreign powers and the Chinese government, Tong Haiquan ultimately ordered Bowlby's execution in 1860.
