Thailand - Ayutthaya - Statue of Buddha
Statue of Buddha amid the ruins at Ayutthaya - the capital of Ayutthaya province in Thailand. The city was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, who came here to escape a smallpox outbreak in Lop Buri, and proclaimed it the capital of his kingdom, often referred to as the Ayutthaya kingdom or Siam. Ayutthaya was named after the city of Ayodhya in India, the birthplace of Rama in the Ramayana. In 1767 the city was destroyed by the Burmese army, and the ruins of the old city now form the Ayutthaya historical park, which is recognized internationally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the enchanting ruins of Ayutthaya, the ancient capital city of Thailand, stands a serene statue of Buddha. Founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, Ayutthaya was once a prosperous kingdom, often referred to as Siam, and served as the political and cultural heart of the region for over four centuries. Named after the legendary Indian city of Ayodhya, the birthplace of Rama in the epic Ramayana, Ayutthaya flourished as a center of Buddhism and international trade. However, the city's rich history was brought to a tragic end in 1767 when it was invaded and destroyed by the Burmese army. The once magnificent city was reduced to ruins, but its historical significance was not forgotten. Today, the remains of Ayutthaya form the Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts visitors from around the world. The statue of Buddha, surrounded by the ruins, is a poignant reminder of the city's storied past. The figure, with its serene expression and graceful posture, stands in contrast to the crumbling brick and stone structures that surround it. The statue, like the city itself, is a testament to the enduring power of history and the beauty that can be found in the ruins of the past.
