Accompanied by his helper Zwarte Piet, or Black Peter, the saint distributes gifts to the excited crowd of children. Saint Nicolas, a historical figure believed to have lived in the 4th century in Myra, Turkey, is the patron saint of children and sailors. In the Netherlands, his arrival marks the beginning of the Christmas season. The legend goes that he sails from Spain with his helpers on a steamship, arriving in the Netherlands in late November. Zwarte Piet, a figure shrouded in controversy in recent years due to his blackened face and allegedly negative portrayal, is said to help Saint Nicolas distribute presents to the children. According to the tradition, he would reward the well-behaved children with sweets, while the naughty ones would receive a lump of coal or a rod to be chastised.
