SS Great Western in a Heavy Gale, North Atlantic, 1846

Engraving showing the Steamship Great Western being struck amidships in a gale during a crossing from Liverpool to New York in 1846. At this point in the voyage, the Captain was trying to wear ship, but the wind was so great that the sails he set were blown off the yards. Launched in 1837, this wooden paddle steamer was designed by I.K. Brunel and gave service to the Great Western Steamship Company and the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. She was scrapped at the Castles Yard, on the Thames, in 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical engraving captures a dramatic moment in the voyage of the SS Great Western, as it battles through a heavy gale in the North Atlantic in 1846. The image shows the steamship being struck amidships by powerful winds, with sails blown off their yards as the Captain tries to wear ship. Designed by I.K. Brunel and launched in 1837, this wooden paddle steamer provided service to both the Great Western Steamship Company and the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. Despite facing challenging conditions on this particular crossing from Liverpool to New York, the SS Great Western played an important role in maritime history. Ultimately scrapped at Castles Yard on the Thames in 1856, this vessel left an indelible mark on transatlantic travel during its time in operation. This print serves as a reminder of both the power of nature and human ingenuity when faced with adversity at sea. It is a testament to the bravery and skill of those who navigated these treacherous waters during an era when transatlantic voyages were fraught with danger and uncertainty.
