EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraved portrait of Sir Thomas Gresham (1509?-1579) is a stunning representation of the influential London merchant and founder of the Royal Exchange. The image is derived from the original painting housed in Mercers Hall, London, and was produced in 1844. Sir Thomas Gresham was born around 1509, though the exact date is uncertain. He rose to prominence as a successful merchant, involved in importing goods from the Continent. Gresham's entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen led him to be appointed as the Queen Elizabeth I's financial agent in Antwerp in 1560. During his time in Antwerp, he gained a deep understanding of the European financial markets and the importance of a central marketplace for trade. Upon his return to England, Sir Thomas put his vision into action and founded the Royal Exchange in 1571. The exchange, located in the heart of London, was designed to facilitate international trade by bringing buyers and sellers together under one roof. The building's distinctive architecture, with its elegant columns and impressive dome, is still a landmark in the city today. Sir Thomas Gresham's legacy extended beyond the Royal Exchange. He was also a key figure in the establishment of the Bank of England and the Court of the Augmentations, which managed the confiscated lands and properties of dissolved monasteries. Gresham's contributions to London's financial and commercial landscape have left an indelible mark on the city's history. This engraved portrait, produced in 1844, offers a glimpse into the life of this remarkable figure and serves as a testament to his enduring impact on London and the world of finance.
