Sir John Suckling: Soldier and Poet (1609-1642) This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Sir John Suckling, an English poet and soldier of the early modern period. Born in 1609, Suckling was a man of many talents and contradictions. He was a member of the court of King Charles I, a skilled swordsman, and a notorious womanizer, but he is best known for his poetic works. The image of Suckling, dressed in the attire of a soldier, conveys his military background. He served in the army during the Bishops' Wars in the early 1630s and was knighted by King Charles I in 1637 for his bravery in battle. The sword at his side is a reminder of his martial prowess. However, Suckling's true passion was poetry. He was a member of the "Sophisters of Wit," a group of poets who were known for their sophisticated and witty verse.
