EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Sir John Hawkins (1532-1595), an Elizabethan seafarer, shipbuilder, Member of Parliament, Treasurer of the Navy, and a pivotal figure in English maritime history. Hawkins rose to prominence in the late 16th century, serving as Rear-Admiral of the English fleet and Captain of the Victory during the historic clash against the Spanish Armada in 1588. His daring tactics and strategic prowess were instrumental in the English victory against the invading Spanish fleet, which marked a turning point in the Anglo-Spanish War. Born in 1532, Hawkins began his seafaring career at a young age, importing valuable commodities from the New World. He was also a skilled shipbuilder, designing and constructing vessels that were faster and more maneuverable than their Spanish counterparts. In 1583, he was appointed Treasurer of the Navy, where he oversaw the expansion and modernization of the English fleet. In 1595, at the age of 63, Hawkins embarked on a mission to attack the Spanish Treasure Fleet as it made its way back to Spain from the Americas. However, during the passage to South America, he fell ill and died on board his ship. His death was a significant loss for the English navy, as he was a respected leader and a visionary in the realm of seafaring. This engraving, produced by ILN, captures the image of a determined and resolute Sir John Hawkins, who played a crucial role in shaping England's maritime history. His legacy as a naval commander, shipbuilder, and political figure continues to be celebrated in the annals of English history.
