This photograph captures Sir Alfred Gilbert (1854-1934), the renowned English sculptor and goldsmith, in the later years of his illustrious career. Taken in 1934, the image reveals an elderly Gilbert, with a distinguished air and piercing gaze, as he sits in a well-appointed studio adorned with his intricately crafted works. Born in London, Gilbert was a prolific artist who gained recognition for his innovative approach to combining sculpture and goldsmithing. He studied under the tutelage of Thomas Woolner and John Bell at the Royal Academy Schools, and later became a member of the Royal Academy itself in 1880. Gilbert's most famous works include the monumental statue of Eros, which graces Piccadilly Circus in London, and the fountain for the Victoria and Albert Museum, which features a central figure of Mercury. His mastery of the human form and intricate attention to detail are evident in this photograph, as well as in his numerous public monuments and private commissions. Despite his success, Gilbert faced numerous challenges throughout his career. He was a controversial figure in the art world due to his unconventional techniques and his insistence on combining sculpture and goldsmithing.
