This evocative image captures the historic moment when the Sale Shakespeare House, believed to be the birthplace of the renowned playwright, was sold at auction in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1847. The building, which had fallen into disrepair and was at risk of being demolished, was purchased for the substantial sum of 3000 pounds by a dedicated committee determined to preserve this invaluable piece of literary history. The Sale Shakespeare House, located in Henley Street, had been the home of the Bard of Avon from his birth in 1564 until he married Anne Hathaway in 1582. Over the centuries, the house had undergone various alterations and additions, and by the mid-19th century, it was in a state of neglect. The sale of the property generated significant interest both locally and nationally, with many recognizing the importance of preserving the birthplace of England's greatest playwright. The successful bid of 3000 pounds was a testament to the public's appreciation for Shakespeare's legacy and their desire to protect it for future generations.
