EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the Mary Evans Picture Library transports us back to the world of Camille Saint-Saëns' grand opera "Samson et Dalila," first performed in Paris in 1892. In this scene from Act 2 (Scene 3), the biblical hero Samson, portrayed here by the renowned baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure, has been lured by the seductive Dalila, played by the soprano Emma Calvé. Having discovered Samson's secret – the source of his superhuman strength, lying in his long hair – Dalila betrays him by cutting his locks. With a heavy heart, Samson, now powerless, is taken captive by the Philistine warriors, as seen in this dramatic moment. The historical background of this scene is rooted in the Old Testament book of Judges, where Samson, a Nazarite and a judge of Israel, falls in love with the Philistine woman Delilah. In an attempt to learn the secret of his strength, she repeatedly asks Samson to reveal it to her, but he refuses. Finally, she tricks him into revealing the truth, leading to his downfall. This photograph, taken around 1890, offers a glimpse into the rich history of opera and the captivating story of Samson and Dalila, as well as the iconic performances of the time. The image showcases the intensity and emotion of the scene, with Samson's defeated expression, Dalila's triumphant call to the Philistine warriors, and the ominous presence of the soldiers in the background. This photograph is a testament to the enduring power of music and the human spirit, even in the face of betrayal and defeat.
