This evocative image captures the scene of a Salop Seller, as depicted in Pyne's Royal Residences and Camp, a popular series published in 1808 by the English engraver and print seller, Thomas Rowlandson, and his publishing partner Rudolph Ackermann. The Salop Seller is shown in the midst of London's bustling streets, offering passers-by traditional English treats: gingerbread and Salop, or Saloop, a wholesome beverage made from the root of the sassafras tree, served with milk and sugar. The Salop Seller's cart is laden with an array of gingerbread, from small, intricately decorated biscuits to larger, more rustic loaves. The seller herself is dressed in the traditional attire of the time, with a long, full apron and a bonnet adorned with a ribbon. Her face is expressive and animated as she calls out to potential customers, her voice blending with the cacophony of sounds that fill the city streets. Salop, a popular drink in the 18th and early 19th centuries, was believed to have originated in Salop, or Shropshire, in England.
